On Saturday, March 13,
2004 District of Columbia C.A.R. members and guests toured the
District of Columbia K-9 Facility and saw several demonstrations by the
K-9 Officers, including basic obedience, pursuit of a suspect, and bomb
sniffing.

Following the
demonstrations, State President Emily Falkenstein presented a bullet
and stab-proof vest to K-9 Officer "Ax" and his handler.

The use of police dogs has
increased over the past ten years. Even with modern crime prevention
technology, nothing can replace the abilities and natural instincts of a
dog. These hardworking police dogs risk their lives every day to
save the lives of others and are often killed in the line of duty.
K-9 Officers are used in many areas of police work and are invaluable to
the police force they serve. These officers are trained to search
buildings; detect hidden narcotics, chemicals and explosives; track,
pursue and apprehend criminals on the run; protect their handler and even
search for lost children.
